World War II Munitions, Torpedoes and Mines: How Ocean Creatures Prosper on Abandoned Weapons

In the slightly salty waters off the Germany's coast rests a graveyard of World War II explosives, torpedo heads and mines. Discarded from barges at the end of the World War II and left behind, thousands explosives have fused into clusters over the decades. They create a corroding blanket on the shallow, silty seafloor of the Lübeck Bay in the western part of the Baltic.

Over the decades, the Nazi arsenal was overlooked and neglected. A increasing amount of tourists traveled to the sandy beaches and calm waters for water sports, kite surfing and amusement parks. Below the waves, the weapons eroded.

Researchers thought to see a lifeless zone, with nothing living there because it was all poisoned, states the lead researcher.

When the initial researchers went looking to see what they were affecting to the marine environment, researchers expected to see a barren area, with no life because it was all contaminated, explains Andrey Vedenin.

What they observed amazed them. Vedenin recounts his scientists exclaiming in amazement when the ROV first transmitted footage. That moment was a remarkable experience, he recalls.

Numerous of ocean life had settled amid the munitions, creating a regenerated ecosystem more populous than the seabed around it.

This marine city was evidence to the persistence of marine life. Indeed surprising how much life we observe in places that are expected to be hazardous and harmful, he states.

Over 40 starfish had piled on to one exposed fragment of TNT. They were dwelling on iron containers, detonator compartments and carrying containers just a short distance from its dangerous content. Fish, crabs, sea anemones and bivalves were all discovered on the old munitions. It's similar to a coral reef in terms of the amount of creatures that was there, notes Vedenin.

Unexpected Creature Concentration

An average of more than 40,000 animals were living on every meter squared of the munitions, experts reported in their research on the finding. The nearby seabed was much less diverse, with only eight thousand individuals on every square metre.

It is ironic that items that are designed to eliminate all life are hosting so much life, says Vedenin. It's evident how the natural world adjusts after a catastrophic event such as the second world war and how, in certain respects, marine life establishes itself to the most hazardous areas.

Man-made Features as Marine Habitats

Man-made features such as shipwrecks, offshore windfarms, drilling platforms and undersea pipes can offer substitutes, compensating for some of the lost habitat. This study reveals that munitions could be similarly advantageous – the proliferation of marine organisms on those in the Lübeck Bay is likely to be repeated elsewhere.

Between 1946 and the post-war period, 1.6 million tonnes of arms were discarded off the Germany's shoreline. Thousands of people placed them in barges; some were deposited in allocated locations, others just discarded at sea while traveling. This is the initial instance scientists have studied how ocean organisms has reacted.

Worldwide Instances of Marine Transformation

These areas become even more important for wildlife as the oceans are increasingly stripped by fishing, bottom trawling and boat mooring. Sunken ships and weapons dump sites effectively act as refuges – they are not official reserves, but almost any kind of human activity is restricted, explains Vedenin. Consequently a lot of species that are typically scarce or declining, such as the cod fish, are flourishing.

Coming Considerations

Anywhere military conflict has happened in the past 100 years, adjacent waters are usually littered with munitions, says Vedenin. Many millions of tonnes of explosive material rest in our seas.

The sites of these weapons are poorly documented, in part because of national borders, classified armed forces records and the reality that archives are stored in old files. They pose an detonation and security risk, as well as threat from the continuous leakage of toxic chemicals.

As the German government and different states begin extracting these artifacts, researchers plan to protect the habitats that have formed nearby. In the Lübeck Bay munitions are already being removed.

We should substitute these steel remains remaining from munitions with some less dangerous, various harmless structures, like perhaps concrete structures, states Vedenin.

He currently hopes that what occurs in Lübeck creates a model for substituting material after explosive extraction in different areas – because even the most destructive weaponry can become framework for new life.
