The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
