The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
