Severe Rains Aggravate Circumstances for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, UN Warn

Nearly 55,000 families have reportedly been affected by the storms, with their items and shelters ruined.

Persistent storms over the recent period have worsened the already dire situation of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the Gaza Strip, as stated by relief agencies.

"Horrendous" Conditions Creates Serious Threats

A representative detailed the recent storm as "awful", with downpours so heavy that up to 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the terrain.

"Last night was truly horrendous for the families. The storms were so strong... And the gusts were so strong," said the official.

There is grave concern that minors residing in makeshift shelters in damp attire will fall victim to hypothermia and additional ailments.

Casualties and Significant Destruction

The health ministry have stated that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have died in building collapses triggered by the storms.

Additional accounts suggest a higher fatality count. Authorities stated that numerous homes had fully given way and many others had sustained partial collapse.

Aid Operations Deemed Not Enough

Organizations have stepped up shipments of shelter, blankets and clothes following the truce commenced, but they stress there is remains not enough aid reaching those in need.

"Agencies are working relentlessly to bring in that assistance and to distribute it, but the magnitude of the necessities is so immense that we continue to see thousands of individuals and minors who are truly struggling each evening," cautioned one official.

Long-Term Concerns and Ceasefire Provisions

The next stage of the truce involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the withdrawal of military forces, and other provisions.

Humanitarian bodies have underscored the need for "increased and sustained relief to respond to immediate and long-term needs."

The war was sparked by an assault in October 2023. Following campaigns have resulted in a significant number of fatalities in the region, as per medical reports.
