The child of previous South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her court case in the port city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she made on online platforms several years back during violent protests in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this violence and is charged with accusations of encouragement to commit terror acts and public violence.

Background of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and came after the previous president's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was serving as president.

She has repeatedly rejected the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the government's evidence as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently stated the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her dad after he founded his own party and competed against the African National Congress.

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the ex-leader and his family.

A small number of supporters from her group, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has stated that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and fails to provide compelling proof for a guilty verdict.
