NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Report Immigration Videos After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has launched a recent digital platform asking locals to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This action follows a day after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering mass outcry.
American Citizens Arrested In Raid
A lawmaker announced during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and held for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to live without fear," state officials wrote in a release.
"If you witnessed and captured immigration enforcement during the raid, I urge you to submit that evidence with the authorities. We are pledged to examining these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The form offers spaces to upload visual evidence of the incident, as well as a field to indicate where it occurred. Before submitting, users must check a option that acknowledges that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or official statement."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which witnesses say included dozens of federal agents, took place in a popular neighborhood of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and additional items are commonly traded en masse – often to visitors.
Videos of Tuesday's raid depict numerous covered and weaponized personnel securing and holding a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the agents through the streets. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the urban roads.
Political Response
During a news conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be detained for without cause." He clarified the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," he stated. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for the government to utilize the troops to halt violence that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, along with NY's governor.
"Once again, the current administration selects oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate declared.
The city's advocacy organizations spoke out also.
"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, covered personnel and tactical gear to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This raid had no connection to community security and everything to do with intimidating residents and communities," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Agency rules bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it does not take into custody US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing immigration enforcement are commonplace as are claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Recently, a submission submitted by legal entities stated medical neglect of women with child in ICE facilities.
