Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Victories After Player Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 opening half points versus the Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since player Rozier was detained for suspected illegal sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was additionally detained as part of a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

But, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.

"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
