Defiant Celtic's manager shows no fear of the sack but Celtic fans unleash anger after derby defeat.
The under-pressure manager declared he was not afraid of dismissal, claiming, “The team is really close to things turning around,” despite edging perilously close to the chopping block with a comprehensive defeat by Rangers.
A Second-Half Collapse Leads to Derby Defeat
Celtic had led Rangers at the break but a second-half capitulation enabled Danny Röhl’s team to draw level on points with the current league title holders. Nancy, who was appointed from Columbus Crew, has now been in charge for six setbacks in his first eight games.
“We are together with the board,” said the manager.
Questioned about his own future, Nancy said: “I don’t think about it. I think about working out methods to aid my players to excel on details.
Protest On Display
The fans made their feelings clear – directed at the dugout and directors – in their hundreds at full time. The board would be most likely to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who steered the club during a temporary stint last year, should a change be made.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. That is the situation for the moment. Yet when I say that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am giving up. No. The message is the turnaround is near, imminently close to change the narrative.”
Focus on the Details
The coach continues to cling to the fact Celtic play well for one half at a time. For instance, were it not for missed chances they might have been more than 1-0 up. “There were positives aside from the fact that we missed our chances,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The level we had at stages was exceptionally high. This is the reality. I wouldn't talk like that if it was not the case. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I noted it's a repeating pattern. That’s why I feel a change is coming to a shift in fortunes. Right now: details, details, details.”
“There were many, many good things that we did, as was the case today. The issue now it’s about sustaining it. My narrative would be different if it was not the case. This is why I am a big believer the team can to get back on track.”
Opposition Reaction Response
Rangers manager played down talk of a serious challenge in spite of what appeared to be a huge result. “One match at a time, and we can really build up a challenge,” he said. “The belief in the team is immense.”
